I know this topic was open a long time ago.
But, I have the w3 total cache ttfb problem too.
It was between 1 to 5 seconds since I install w3 Total Cache.

I solve my problem by deactivating gzip (deflate) option in browser caching section.
and my ttfb was now 0.2 or 0.3 !!
